Recently, a voucher bill moved to the Governor’s desk to authorize the spending of public dollars in private schools. This political battle over vouchers has gone on for the last two years. This battle was even used as a bargaining chip in previous years to keep schools from receiving much-needed funding to address inflation and employee compensation. We have been anticipating the passage of this bill for some time. I have been on record saying that it was not a matter of if this day would come, but when this day would come. Here in Alief ISD, rather than wait for support, we have focused on taking care of ourselves, and we will continue to do so.
This week, our high school students will take their Algebra end-of-course exam. Tests like the STAAR, SAT, and ACT are measurements that our state uses to determine school effectiveness, comparing us to charter or private schools. We have passionate leaders and effective teachers who will help us stand out from the competition that can come with vouchers. As vouchers become part of the new educational landscape, we will embrace competition with the conviction that we are best equipped to meet the academic needs of our students in Texas.
We need educators who believe in the magic that can happen in the classroom to help us meet student needs. I encourage everyone to share the opportunity to join the Alief family on your socials. We are always looking for talented teachers to serve the needs of our community and students.
Congratulations to the Men of Brilliance, Miller Step Team, for representing our district at the ACET State Conference. They received a standing ovation for their performance!
Congratulations to the Alief Youth Basketball League for receiving a grant from the Alief ISD Education Foundation and for promoting student health, teamwork, and a love for sports. This league provides students with a safe and structured environment to stay active, develop important life skills, and build friendships through the game of basketball. By investing in youth programs like this, we’re helping our students grow physically, mentally, and socially while creating positive memories that will last a lifetime. We look forward to seeing our young athletes thrive both on and off the court!
Rees and Petrosky Elementary Students Receive Gift of Literacy from Bess the Book Bus and CITGO!
We are excited to celebrate a wonderful gift of learning and imagination for our students! Thanks to the generosity of Bess the Book Bus and CITGO, every Pre-K through 2nd grade student at Rees Elementary and Petrosky Elementary received free books to take home and enjoy.
This incredible donation supports our mission of nurturing a love for reading from an early age and empowering students with the tools they need for lifelong learning. Watching the students’ faces light up as they received their books was truly priceless!

“Let’s Make It Clear” Backpack Policy
In an effort to improve the safety measures currently in place, beginning with the 2025-2026 school year and beyond, Alief ISD will require all intermediate, middle, and high school students to use clear backpacks.
Students participating in an extracurricular activity are permitted to carry non-transparent bags to store items pertaining to their particular activity (i.e., band, athletics, etc.).
All extracurricular activity bags must be stored in designated areas upon entry into the school and are subject to search.
Additionally, the maximum size for non-transparent bags that students in intermediate, middle, and high school will be permitted to carry during the school day, such as lunch kits, pencil bags, and purses, will be “6 x 9”.
Elementary school students will be allowed to continue using traditional backpacks.
